I had a message today from a prospective camper keen to know what they need to bring with them on their inaugral camping trip. The camping checklist is born.
Not wanting to forget something I decided to do a bit of research before I sent them off without some critical part of the packing included, like a tent.
This is what I came up with, but remember this is the bare minimum for a real camping trip, rather than what you might need for a luxury glamping stay.
Camping equipment:
- Tent
- Tent pegs (plus some spares)
- Mallet
- Dustpan and brush
- Torch or Lantern
Sleeping checklist
- Sleeping bag
- Sleepmat or air bed
- and footpump
- Pillow (any fool can be uncomfortable according to my Dad)
- Blankets or extra clothes in case it gets cold
Cooking equipment
- Stove
- Matches
- Water container
- Coolbag and ice blocks
- Bottle opener
- Cups
- Crockery and Cutlery
- Saucepan
- Kettle
- Pot
- Tea bags
- Milk and food
- Marshmallows,
- Plus something fun to drink
Other useful items to take camping
- Bin bags
- First aid kit
- Some string
- Bird identifier
- Penknife
We work on the theory that a real camping trip requires a lots less equipment, its more about the people you are with. You can make use of items on sites, so you’ll probably find an old log to sit on rather than transporting a deckchair across the country and you can whittle a hazel stick to toast a marshmallow.
Likewise you may be able to make do without the stove by using a fire stand and lighting a campfire which you can cook over. Much more fun.
To make this an even more exciting trip we have published our little ode to nothing much, The Escapees Handbook and you can download a copy or order a copy when you are next in Sussex, staying at The Secret Campsite

masking tape is really useful as a quick fix for tents and an emergency woolly hat under your pillow will be the quickest way to warm you up if you feel a chill in the middle of the night. Paracetomal and earplugs for emergencies! Don't forget salt or your cooking will be tasteless. Elastic bands to keep food sealed and filling your coolbox with frozen peas and raspberries will help to keep your stuff chilled. I could go on for days! I have an army ration kit, I will send in a photo of the contents...
