Yesterday I went to the Houses of Parliament on the Rally for Nature with the aim to lobby MP’s to make sure that they factor our wildlife into their election manifestos. I caught the one hour train from Cooksbridge to London Victoria and we assembled at Church House in Westminster. At Church House there were talks and a question and answer session with MP’s and members of the wildlife trusts organising the event.
We then walked to Parliament with our placards, I had a nifty Butterfly Conservation banner.
Upon arrival and following security checks we signed Green Cards to request a meeting with our local MP. Norman Baker the Lewes MP wasn’t available but i look forward to hearing from him how his party will be ensuring that we protect some our endangered species and don’t allow developments to run roughshod over the environment.
Whilst there I met some interesting people including Tony Whitbread who is the CEO of Sussex Wildlife Trust, Mark Avery who used to run part of the RSPB, and listened to Caroline Lucas local Green Party MP for Brighton and Kerry McCarthy from Labour. The afternoon was treated to Conservative and Lib Dem candidates. It was fun, although being a school day, it lacked some of the energy that a group of children would have added which got me thinking about how we make sure that our children have the chance to get passionate about wildlife.
